Nise da Sillveira was a Brazilian psychiatrist, responsible for the revolution in psychiatric treatments in Brazil, Nise opposes the new techniques to treat the inmates and refuses to use electroshocks, straitjackets and insulation.
In creating friction with her colleagues in the profession, Nise is transferred to the Occupational Therapy section, an area completely scorned and without the least resources.
It is at this moment that Nise revolutionizes the treatment of mental illnesses, along with doctor Fábio Sodré. Instead of allowing his patients to do cleaning or to carry on the soaps, quite common practices until then, he offers them brushes, paints and white canvases. Schizophrenics were free to express themselves through art and often drew mandalas. The result is unbelievable: in addition to improving their behavior, they paint true works of art.
